FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

FELLOWSHIPS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Chancellor's Fellowships, $5000 (Application Deadline February 1)

The Graduate School seeks applications from new graduate studentseach academic year. Applicants to graduate school for Summer or Fall may apply by following the directions included in the admission materials. Note: Applicants will include with their admission materials a 500 word essay on the importance of graduate education to their career goals.

Chancellor's Fellows should meet the following criteria :

  • Unconditional admission to a graduate degree program at Appalachian for Summer or Fall.
  • Full-time status intended (minimum enrollment in 9 graduate credit hours).
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.7 for each separate post secondary degree earned.
  • 75th percentile or higher on each section of the required entrance exam (GRE, MAT, GMAT) using scores that are no more than 3 years old.

Finalists will be invited to interviews with the Graduate School during the University's Scholars Weekend in late February.

Chancellor's Fellows who demonstrate excellence their first year by maintaining a 3.7 GPA will automatically receive a second year of funding. The top finalist for the Chancellor's Fellowship will receive the Lovill Fellowship, a $10,000 award for the first year and a $5000 award for the second year.

Alumni Fellowship, $2500 (Application Deadline March 31)

Between five and ten Alumni Fellowships are awarded each Fall to outstanding new or continuing graduate students. New students may apply by following the directions included in the admission materials. Note: Applicants will include with their admission materials a 500 word essay on the importance of graduate education to their career goals. Continuing students should use the paper application form .

To be considered for the Alumni Fellowship, a new student should have:

  • Unconditional admission to a graduate degree program at Appalachian for Summer or Fall.
  • Full-time status intended (minimum enrollment in 9 graduate credit hours per semester).
  • An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.5.
  • standardized test scores at or above the 60th percentile.

Continuing students should demonstrate progress in their degree programs with a 3.7 cumulative GPA and a letter of support from the chair or program director. The Alumni Fellowship is not automatically renewable, but a recipient any reapply and compete for a second award.

Alumni Scholarship, $1250 (Application Deadline March 31)

Between ten and fifteen Alumni Scholarships are awarded each year to excellent new or continuing graduate students. New students may apply by indicating their interest on the application for admission. Note: Applicants will include with their admission materials a 500 word essay on the importance of graduate education to their career goals. Continuing students should use the paper application form .

To be considered for the Alumni Scholarship, a new student should have:

  • Unconditional admission to a graduate degree program at Appalachian for Summer or Fall.
  • Full-time status intended (minimum enrollment in 9 graduate credit hours per semester).
  • An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.3.
  • standardized test scores at or above the 50th percentile.

Continuing students should demonstrate progress in their degree programs with a 3.5 cumulative GPA and a letter of support from the chair or program director. The Alumni Scholarship is not automatically renewable, but a recipient any reapply and compete for a second award.

Diversity Fellowships, $1500 (Application Deadline July 1)

The Graduate School seeks applications from graduate students to the Diversity Fellows Program for Academic Year 2007-08.

Diversity Fellows receive $1500 for the academic year. Reapplication at the end of an appointment is encouraged. A graduate student may be a Diversity Fellow for up to two years. A team of four Diversity Fellows will be selected to work with the Graduate School to plan and implement a project designed to increase diversity and inclusiveness in graduate education at Appalachian.

Applicants must meet the following criteria :

  • Unconditional admission to a graduate degree program at Appalachian.
  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.3 (new students) or graduate GPA of at least 3.7 (continuing students).
  • Full-time status (minimum enrollment in 9 graduate credit hours per semester).
  • Life experience that positions the applicant to bring diversity to applicant's degree program and provides the applicant with a unique perspective on the value of diversity and inclusiveness in graduate programs.

The application must include the following (for both new and returning graduate students):

  • A letter of application.
  • An essay describing how the applicant can contribute toward creating a climate of diversity and inclusiveness, not only in the applicant's graduate program but also to Appalachian's graduate programs as a whole.
  • A letter of support from the applicant's graduate program director, graduate mentor, or department chair.
  • A current resumé or curriculum vitae.

Diversity Fellows will be announced shortly after classes begin in August.

Minority Presence Grants, $300-$500

Five to ten minority presence grants are available to minority students who are North Carolina residents. Recipients will be chosen from all full-time (9 hours per semester) graduate students who have completed the FAFSA (Federal Finacial Aid Form) and demonstrated financial need. Awards are not renewable.

The Graduate Scholarship Committee will select the 2005-2006 Diversity Fellows. Finalists will be invited to interviews with the Committee, and the new Diversity Fellows will be announced before classes begin in August.

Research Grants

  • OSR Research Grants - Faculty or student initiated projects from a variety of diciplines are awarded in amounts up to $500. [ list of current projects ]
  • International Student Research Grants - 3-5 awards up to $1,500 are available to undergraduate or graduate students to conduct projects that have an International focus.
  • Graduate Student Research Grants - Awards up to $400 are available to graduate students for completion of thier capstone/exit research project, product of learning, Thesis, or Dissertation.
  • BeActive NC / Appalachian Partnership Grants - All BeActive NC/Appalachian Partnership Grants have been awarded for this fiscal year (through June 30, 2007). The Office of Student Research is NO LONGER accepting applications - we will resume accepting new applications starting in July 2007. These projects, awarded in amounts up to $1000, will examine potential benefits of regular physical activity/exercise from a physiological, psychological, epidemiological, sociological, economical, or public health perspective.
  • Public Service Research Program Grants (PSRP) - (application deadline is April 6, 2007) Awards up to $500 are availble to undergraduate students who would like to connect public service with their academic work/research interests through a senior thesis.
  • GSAS Research Grants - Graduate Student Association Senate awards research grants up to $500.
