Doc Watson

The Doc Watson Endowment for Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State University provides opportunities for Appalachian Music students to work with expert practitioners in the field, and it brings Appalachian musicians and scholars to our campus. Students are able to document, celebrate, and study the contributions of Appalachian musicians adding to a growing body of knowledge of the diverse musical traditions that intersect in Appalachia.

The Center for Appalachian Studies is a unit within Appalachian’s University College.  University College consists of the university’s integrated general education curriculum, academic support services, residential learning communities, interdisciplinary degree programs and co-curricular programming—all designed to support the work of students both inside and outside of the classroom.

Independent Study Form (PDF 77K)

INDEPENDENT STUDY INSTRUCTIONS:

Special Course Form:  Obtain form in AS office.  Fill out your full name and e-mail address in the appropriate spaces.  Form must be signed by the Center Director or Program Director.

Independent Study Form (available above or in the AS office)
In the appropriate spaces:

  1. fill out the appropriate lines
  2. the signature of your instructor and the Center Director or Program Director is required
  3. your instructor will determine the requirements of the independent study and fill out the independent study outline on the second page
  4. your signature is required on the second page

Make a copy of the Special Course Form and the Independent Study Form for the Appalachian Studies Office, a copy for yourself, and supply a copy to your instructor.

Take the entire package to the University College Dean’s office located in the  BB Dougherty Administration building, room 207 for signature; then to the Graduate School located in room 232, John E. Thomas (JET) building; then to the Registrar’s Office (also in JET), room 134 or 109.

Internship Form (PDF 56K)

INTERNSHIP INSTRUCTIONS:

Special Course Form:  Obtain form in AS office.  Fill out your full name and e-mail address in the appropriate spaces.  Form must be signed by the Center Director or Program Director.

Internship Contract (available above or in the AS office)
In the appropriate spaces:

  1. fill out your name, local address, phone number and GPA
  2. on the second page your signature and date is required

Have the Center or Program Director sign the form.

Make a copy of the Special Course Form, Internship Contract, and Internship Requirements for the Appalachian Studies Office and a copy for yourself.

Take the entire package to the University College office located in room 207 of the BB Dougherty Administration building for signature; then to the Graduate School located in room 232, John E. Thomas (JET) building; then to the Registrar’s Office (also in JET), room 134 or 109.
