SUMMER 2009
WALES STUDY ABROAD
Wales Brochure (.doc)
STUDY ABROAD IN WALES
Earn 6 hours GRADUATE or UNDERGRADUATE CREDIT in Appalachian Studies (AS 5110, AS 4900) or Anthropology (ANT 3530) this summer through ASU’s Postindustrial Wales Field School
June 6 - July 3, 2009
Postindustrial Wales (AS 5110: Ethnographic Field Study, 6 hours; AS 4900: Internship Wales, 6 hours;
ANT 3530: Field Experience: Internship, 6 hours) exposes students to community-based responses to political, economic and cultural transformations in Welsh Society following the final contraction of heavy industry in the 1980s. Students should develop an understanding of the variation in responses to socioeconomic change through community-based internships, meetings with political activists and officials at various levels of government, visitation to cultural events and tourist sites, invited lectures with Welsh scholars, and general interaction in Welsh society. The course is organized around a month-long internship program in the south Wales village of Ystradgynlais. Students are assigned to work with area community development organizations, cultural institutions and businesses. Through these and other activities, the course objective is to encourage students to build career skills and analyze the multi-faceted character of community responses to ‘postindustrialism’ from a cross-cultural perspective.
The projected itinerary also involves travel to and experience of:
- Cardiff, the capitol of Wales, including the National Assembly for Wales
- Swansea and the Dylan Thomas Museum
- The coastal town of Aberystwyth and the National Library of Wales
- The Brecon Beacons National Park for hiking
- Powys for a farm tour and the nearby book village of Hay-on-Wye
- Castles and beaches of the south Wales coast
- Industrial heritage tourism sites
- Celtic music jam sessions and cultural events
- A two-day stay in London at the trip’s end
A total of 8 students will be selected to participate; graduate students will be given preference in the selection process, but acceptance is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Cost: $2346.00 per student (program fees). This covers: travel in the UK, lodging, activity fees, and meals. AIRFARE AND TUITION NOT INCLUDED.
For Application, Financial Aid, or More Information, contact the Center for Appalachian Studies (262-4089), or e-mail the trip Directors, Dr. Patricia Beaver (beaverpd@appstate.edu) or Dr. William Schumann (wschumann@atu.edu).
